Excursion description
The Torii Gate marks the sacred grounds of the Higashi Shirauraura Inari jinja Shinto Shrine, which was opened in 1914. The Torii bears the inscription ‘In honour of the 2,600th anniversary of the founding of Great Japan’ – this mythological date was widely celebrated in 1940. From the upper platform, there are excellent views of the village, the sea and the hills. Seals can be seen with binoculars installed here.
Tikhaya Bay is a natural corner in Makarovsky District, 130 km from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The bay is located in the Terpeniya Bay on the east coast of Sakhalin. Ivan Kruzenstern, the first Russian navigator, called the bay ‘Quiet’. The Zhdanko Ridge covers the bay from the road side.
Klokovsky Waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in Sakhalin. It is located on an unnamed stream near Cape Klokova, which gave it its name. The height of the waterfall is 40 metres (depending on the season).
