Excursion Tikhaya Bay and Cape Burunnyi

This excursion allows the tourist to combine hiking and maritime tourism.  The first site we encounter on the way is the Torii Gate. The Torii Gate marked the sacred area of the Shinto temple Higashi Shiraura Inari jinja, which was opened in 1914. The inscription on the gate reads ‘In honour of the 2600th anniversary of the founding of Great Japan’ – this mythological date was widely celebrated in 1940. From the upper platform you can see the village, the sea and the hills. Seals can be seen through the binoculars installed here. Our next stop is at Tikhaya Bay.

Tikhaya Bay is a unique natural corner located in Makarovsky district, 130 km from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The bay is located in the Gulf of Patience, on the east coast of Sakhalin. Ivan Kruzenstern, the first Russian navigator, called the bay ‘Quiet’. From the road side the bay is covered by the Zhdanko Ridge. In the bay we get into the boats and along the Zhdanko Ridge, admiring waterfalls, we go by sea to Burunny Cape.

Burunny Cape is located in the northern part of the island and is a difficult place to reach. The main waterfall at Burunny Cape has no name, but it is one of the highest waterfalls on the island.
