Winter excursion to Tikhaya Bay and Klokovsky Waterfall
Excursion description
The Torii gates marked the sacred territory of the Shinto shrine Higashi Shiraura Inari Jinja. The shrine opened in 1914. An inscription is carved on the gates: “In honour of the 2,600th anniversary of the founding of Great Japan” — a date widely celebrated in 1940. From the upper platform there is an excellent view of the sea, the village and the hills. Through the binoculars installed here you can see spotted seals.
Klokovsky Waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls on Sakhalin. It is located on an unnamed stream near Cape Klokova, which is how it got its name. The height of the waterfall is 40 metres (it varies depending on the season).
